Dr. Muhammad Roil Bilad joined Dr. Arafat’s group at Masdar Institute of Science and Technology (MIST) as a postdoctoral researcher in November 2013. His main research has to do with developing membranes (mainly via phase inversion technique) for sustainable membrane distillation (MD) applications. He is trying to unravel the complex inter-relations between phase inversion parameters by investigating the role played by the fundamental aspects of phase inversion on membrane properties and performance, such as the role of supporting materials, role of polymer grade and so forth. From these fundamental studies, he expects to find a novel technique to prepare a membrane for MD. This membrane would feature highly porous and super hydrophobic properties, along with a very narrow pore size distribution. He is also working on developing novel membrane characterization techniques by applying the cutting edge of visualization available in MIST in combination with image analysis. In addition to this he is continuing his earlier research on membrane bioreactors for wastewater treatment (both in aerobic and in anaerobic conditions) and membrane photobioreactors for microalgae cultivation and harvesting.

Before joining MIST, Dr. Bilad was a research associate at the Centre for Surface Chemistry and Catalysis (COK) at KU Leuven, from where he completed his doctoral degree in bioscience engineering. During his postdoctoral tenure, he investigated the impact of natural organic matter and transparent exopolymeric particles on microalgal growth and membrane fouling during microalgae harvesting using membrane filtration. Since the research in COK included different aspects of membrane science and technology, i.e. developing customized polymers and membranes, testing industrial membrane samples, and running pilot-scale membrane installation; through close collaboration with his colleagues, Dr. Bilad has gained vast experience in the field of membrane science and technology.

His Ph.D was on membrane fouling in membrane bioreactors (MBRs) for wastewater treatment and microalgae harvesting. It was part of an inter-disciplinary research project focusing on remediation, characterization and modeling of membrane fouling in MBRs. His work was essential for the success of the project. His work included high-throughput MBR development, nanofiber and polymeric membranes optimization, novel dynamic filtration system development, microalgae harvesting and co-development of new membranes via consultancy (industrial projects).
