Musthafa completed his doctoral degree under the guidance of  Prof. Arafat. His research focused on synthesizing, characterizing, and testing novel membranes with incorporated nano-materials. These membranes were used in membrane distillation, reverse osmosis, and MBR applications.

Musthafa received his Bachelor in Chemistry (2009) from Kannur University and then completed his Master in Environmental Technology (2011) from Cochin University of Science and Technology. During his MSc, he has worked on the evaluation and redesign of river water quality monitoring networks through a multivariate statistical approach under the supervision of Prof. S. Karmakar (IIT Bombay). After completing his MSc, he pursued an MTech in Environmental Engineering and Management at Pondicherry University. As an MTech student, he synthesized gold, silver, platinum monometallic and bimetallic nanoparticles through a biomimetic approach under the guidance of Dr. Tasneem Abbasi and Prof. S.A Abbasi.
