Short Bio

Prof. Arafat received his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Cincinnati (Cincinnati, OH, USA) in 2000. From 2000-2003, he worked at Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) (Illinois, USA) as a researcher and project manager for the United States Department of Energy (DOE), developing processes for nuclear waste treatment at DOE sites. Between 2003 and 2010, Dr. Arafat served as a faculty member at the Chemical Engineering Department at An-Najah University (Nablus, Palestine). Between 2009 and 2012, he also served as an adjunct associate professor in the Department of Biological Engineering at Utah State University (Utah, USA). In 2010, he joined Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT, USA) as a visiting scholar for six months, then moved to Abu Dhabi (UAE) in 2011 where he now works at Masdar Institute of Science and Technology as a professor in the Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering. He is a PI/co-PI on 21 research grants, exceeding USD $11M in total funding, and a recipient of several prestigious international awards and international research fellowships. He is an author of 80 book chapters and peer-reviewed journal papers and 80+ conference papers. He delivered 40 keynote speeches, graduate seminars, and invited talks worldwide. He supervised 29 graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. The focus of Dr. Arafat’s recent research interests is on the development of novel membranes, especially for desalination (membrane distillation), filtration, and wastewater treatment (MBR) and on sustainability assessment of desalination processes including autonomous and renewables-powered. Additionally, Dr. Arafat previously had research interests in adsorption, solvent extraction, and hazardous and nuclear waste treatment. He also has academic interests in quality assurance in higher education.

  • Membrane synthesis for water and wastewater treatment
  • Solid waste management

Additionally, Dr. Arafat previously had research interests in adsorption, solvent extraction, and hazardous and nuclear waste treatment. He also has academic interests in quality assurance in higher education.

Courses Taught

At MIST: WEN617- Membrane Technology (PhD/MSc-Level): The course describes in details membrane separation technology in the context of wide range of applications, especially in desalination, filtration and wastewater treatment. The course covers: global water shortages and need for membrane technology, microfiltration, ultrafiltration, nanofiltration (NF), membrane distillation (MD), forward osmosis (FO), membrane bioreactors (MBR) and reverse osmosis (RO) membrane processes. It also discusses operational issues of membrane-based systems, their limitations and system configuration and design. WEN502- Industrial Ecology (MSc-Level): Quantitative techniques for life cycle analysis of the impacts of materials extraction, processing use, and recycling; and economic analysis of materials processing, products, and markets. Student teams undertake a major case study of an energy related product/process using the latest methods of analysis and computer‐based models of materials process. WEN614-Sustainable Desalination Processes (PhD/MSc-Level): Introduces key issues related to promoting sustainable desalination operations in today’s desalination industry. The course analyzes developments in the desalination industry using the three elements of sustainability: cost society, and the environment. The course covers: i) environmental impacts of desalination processes, ii) designing safe and sustainable intake and outfall systems for desalination plants, iii) assessing economic feasibility of new desalination processes, iv) evaluation of renewable‐energy powered desalination processes, v) application of membrane distillation in desalination, and vi) recent technological improvements for enhanced desalination processes.
